At Wellington Sports Med we offer a Cancer rehabilitation physiotherapy service, which provides support and specifically designed programmes for people to retain their function and wellbeing after a cancer diagnosis.
What can this service help with?
Cancer rehabilitation and exercise can reduce side effects of the disease and debilitating cancer treatments, and can improve functional ability, quality of life and ultimately, survival.
What does this service look like?
The initial appointment:
- 1:1 assessment with the cancer physiotherapist
- Information gathering regarding cancer history (treatments/medications/side effects)
- Physical testing (strength and cardiovascular testing)
- Fatigue assessment if indicated
- Breathing retraining if indicated
- Education regarding functional limitations, findings of the assessment and planning for home programme
- A personalised home exercise programme based on findings and functional limitations
The follow-up appointments:
- 1:1 session with the cancer physiotherapist
- Exercise based sessions (strength/cardiovascular fitness)
- Breathing retraining if indicated
- Fatigue management strategies if indicated
- Education
- Review and advance your home exercise programme
Appointment cost/funding options
Funding options are available for these appointments through various foundations including Pinc & Steel, Breast Cancer Foundation, Bowel Cancer NZ.
If funding is approved, the charge to the client is $10 per appointment. Typically up to four appointments are funded.
Non funded appointments are $110 per appointment.
Appointments are 1 hour long.
